Bates Awarded $6 Million U.S. Army Contract for Mountain Combat Boots

ROCKFORD, MI (September, 2012) – Bates® Footwear, a division of Wolverine Worldwide, announced today that it will manufacture Temperate Weather Mountain Combat Boots for the U.S. Army under a new U.S. Government contract issued by Natick Contracting Division.

Bates will produce 64,000 pairs of the newly designed Mountain Combat boot within the next six months at their U.S.-based facility in Big Rapids, Michigan. This product meets all Berry Amendment requirements.

U.S. Congressman Dave Camp noted, “Bates produces some of the world’s most technologically advanced footwear for U.S. troops. Every time I visit the Big Rapids plant I leave more and more impressed by the dedication, commitment and tireless work ethic of the employees at Bates. This is great news for the Big Rapids community and fourth district of Michigan.”

This contract award, combined with the brand’s other recent contract awards for Army Hot Weather Mountain Combat Boots, brings the cumulative value of the Mountain Combat Boot contracts to just over $15 million in 2012. “We are very proud of our recent Army Mountain Combat Boot contract awards,” said Mike Stornant, Vice President and General Manager of Bates Footwear. “This is a relatively new product for the Army, and we are pleased they have chosen Bates based on our quality performance and ability to respond to the short-term delivery schedules required under these contracts. We remain committed to the U.S. Army and Department of Defense as we provide U.S. troops with the highest quality footwear that supports and protects them in their warfighting efforts.”

It’s Time to Rev ‘Em Up:
The Bates Riding Collection is Hitting the Road in Time for Spring

Rockford, MI (March 2012) – Just when you thought the ride couldn’t possibly get any better, it has. Available for Spring 2012, the Bates Riding Collection is hitting the asphalt, and select retail locations. Designed for those who demand indestructible riding equipment, from their motorcycle to their riding gear, the newest offering by the well respected uniform footwear manufacturer, Bates® Footwear (Bates), promises high-performance quality and delivers high-style wearability.

“While we’re experts in creating heavy-duty boots, this is a bit of a departure for our brand,” says Julie McCauley, Bates Marketing Manager. “To date, our focus has been on designing footwear that could, for instance, carry soldiers into hostile terrains. Now, we’re using that same expertise to make boots that perform as well for everyday motorcyclists and the recreational weekend warrior.”

But make no mistake. The attention to detail and consistent use of top-tier materials that Bates is celebrated for is reflected in each of the eight diverse styles that comprise the men’s collection: Ormond, Big Bend, Talimena, Tahoe, Palomar, Black Canyon, Copper Trail, and Escalante. And if the names sound familiar to motorcycle enthusiasts, it’s no surprise—each boot was named after a favorite scenic ride.

From the sleek mid-calf Tahoe with classic metal accents to the hardcore lace-up Escalente that boasts a waterproof leather/mesh fusion upper, Bates wanted to deliver what riders wanted as well as needed. Says McCauley, “We realize that riders look for specific qualities in their riding boots. Some prefer the longer boot while others prefer a shorter one. Some like laces, others like the classic zip-up. That’s why, when designing our boots, we focused on the collection as a whole and repeatedly asked ourselves if we were creating variety as well as value. We think the answer is clearly ‘yes.’”

Which is why, whether they’re worn daily or just on long weekend rides, one thing’s for certain. When it comes to high-performance riding boots, in more ways than one, you could say that there’s a new leader in the pack. The Bates Riding Collection. Available now.

Bates® Footwear To Launch Innovative, High-Performance Zero Mass Collection in Spring 2012

Rockford, MI (January 13, 2012) – When you think of innovative, high-performance footwear, not many companies probably come to mind. However, there is one brand that should easily rise to the top. Bates® Footwear (Bates), a leading supplier of uniform footwear, has once again proven that its reputation for being proactive in product development and responsive to those who rely on state-of-the-art comfort technology is entirely deserved.

New for spring 2012, Bates will be launching its revolutionary Zero Mass Collection. Specifically created in reaction to dealer feedback and end user needs, the collection will consist of an 8” Black Side Zip Boot (Model #E05161); a 6” Black Side Zip Boot (Model #E05162); an 8” Desert Tan Boot (Model #E05118); and an 8” Sage Green Boot (Model #E05128). All four boots will feature genuine leather or Wolverine Warrior Leather® uppers, highly breathable nylon, and a low profile design that delivers lasting comfort and enhanced natural movement.

Inside and out, each aspect of the Zero Mass tactical/training footwear line has been meticulously designed to maximize comfort and minimize weight. “There is nothing in these boots that we didn’t rethink,” says Roger Huard, Vice President of Product Development at Wolverine Worldwide, Inc. “Even the lacing system was revamped in an effort to maximize weight relief.”

Crucial to reducing the boots’ weight was the reduction of outsole rubber and the introduction of a compression-molded EVA. Also impressive is the lightweight performance-oriented polyurethane insert, which delivers cushioning and shock absorption with no deterioration of each, no matter how long, or how hard, the boots are worn.

The lightweight training boots were also designed with a new “low-rider last”, which delivers the tactile interaction with the terrain Bates users were seeking. Increasing breathability was also a key focus. As such, nylon was incorporated in the critical areas of each boot, allowing for enhanced airflow and, therefore, enhanced comfort. The breathable, Aegis™ Antimicrobial-treated insoles also boast anti-odor, moisture-wicking properties, helping to keep feet dry.

While all four boots have durable leather uppers, the Desert Sand and Sage Green boots are made of Wolverine Warrior Leather. “Wolverine Warrior Leather is one of our most exciting innovations,” says Brent Babbs, National Sales Manager at Bates Footwear. “It’s breathable, easy to clean, and quick drying—three hugely important features to those in uniform.” Adds Huard, “Since the protector is incorporated into our actual tanning process, the boots are protected from virtually all sorts of dirt, chemicals, oil, and water-based stains.”

Fully tested and having yielded impressive results, one can see why the Zero Mass Collection will be one of the most sought-after tactical/training boots around. Says Huard, “We were challenged to create a hard-wearing, tactical boot that could withstand rigorous use and still deliver maximum comfort, and that’s exactly what the development teams at Bates and Wolverine Worldwide delivered.” “We know these boots are better, because that’s how we designed them,” says Babbs. “Not only are they one of the lightest boots available, they’re among the most advanced. Given who they’re made for, they couldn’t be anything less.”

The men’s only Zero Mass Collection will be available in retail locations in spring 2012. To view the Zero Mass Collection video, visit www.batesfootwear.com.

Originated by five women from Texas who call themselves “The Boot Girls”, The Boot Campaign provides a tangible way for Americans to show support of our troops and directly benefit our military through purchases of boots and other merchandise.

The Boot Girls are on their way to achieve one mission; to see one million Americans in a pair of Boot Campaign “give back” boots.  Their motto is simple; “When They Come Back, We Give Back”. To help them achieve this mission, Bates has provided a lineup of boot styles for the Boot Campaign.  The Bates boots available to purchase online include Army boots, a Navy SEALs boot, USMC styles and an Air Force style. Proceeds from purchasing signature boots from the Boot Campaign are donated to their charity partners including the Lone Survivor Foundation, Not Alone, Wounded Wear, and Military Warriors Support Foundation.

A driving factor in the success of The Boot Campaign has been the wide support from music, sports and political influences signing up to show their patronage. Celebrities range from country music stars Joe Nichols and Dolly Parton to TV and radio host Glenn Beck. Sports and Political figures such as The Detroit Red Wings, Chicago Cubs and the Governor of Texas, Rick Perry have been spotted wearing the military fashioned boots to show their support.

Bates is humbled by the opportunity to give back to the men and women that so proudly serve to protect their country. As Ron Woznick, VicePresident & General Manager for Bates, said; “Bates has the honor of providing footwear to thousands of warfighters each year that selflessly protect our country. Their sacrifices and commitment are simply amazing.  We are privileged to begin working more closely with the Boot Campaign, who has done a phenomenal job of drawing attention and supporting our military heroes.”

Bates® Footwear Partners with Wounded Warrior Project to Honor and Empower Wounded Warriors.

Rockford, MI (January 2011) Bates Footwear will be partnering with Wounded Warrior Project (WWP), a nonprofit organization that supports thousands of wounded warriors each year during their transition back to civilian life.

WWP began when several veterans and friends, moved by stories of the first wounded service members returning home from Afghanistan and Iraq, took action to help others in need. What started as a program to provide comfort items to wounded servicemen and women has grown into a complete rehabilitative effort to assist warriors as they recover. Over 40,000 of our nation’s armed forces have been physically wounded during the current military conflicts. Hundreds of thousands more are estimated to be recovering from invisible wounds of war, including post-traumatic stress disorder, major depression, and traumatic brain injury.

WWP assists wounded warriors and their families through a holistic approach to their recovery. Whether through caregiver retreats, combat stress programs, career and education services, or adaptive sporting opportunities, WWP empowers warriors with the tools essential to not just survive their injuries but to thrive and achieve personal and professional success.

Bates Footwear is proud to announce our partnership with Wounded Warrior Project to raise awareness and enlist the public's aid for the needs of injured service members. It humbles us to know that we may be playing a small role to help troops heal from the physical and emotional wounds they have suffered while serving our nation.

Manufacturing quality boots and shoes to protect the men and women that wear them is part of the value that drives Bates to give back. “We are grateful to show our support and gratitude to warfighters who have honored our country with incredible sacrifice by supporting a worthy cause such as Wounded Warrior Project” said Ron Woznick, Bates VP & General Manager.

About Wounded Warrior Project

The mission of the Wounded Warrior Project® (WWP) is to honor and empower wounded warriors. WWP’s purpose is to raise awareness and to enlist the public’s aid for the needs of injured service members, to help injured servicemen and women aid and assist each other, and to provide unique, direct programs and services to meet their needs.
