Bates® Footwear To Launch Innovative, High-Performance Zero Mass Collection in Spring 2012

Rockford, MI (January 13, 2012) – When you think of innovative, high-performance footwear, not many companies probably come to mind. However, there is one brand that should easily rise to the top. New for spring 2012, Bates will be launching its revolutionary Zero Mass Collection. Specifically created in reaction to dealer feedback and end user needs, the collection will consist of an 8” Black Side Zip Boot (Model #E05161); a 6” Black Side Zip Boot (Model #E05162); an 8” Desert Tan Boot (Model #E05118); and an 8” Sage Green Boot (Model #E05128). All four boots will feature genuine leather or Wolverine Warrior Leather® uppers, highly breathable nylon, and a low profile design that delivers lasting comfort and enhanced natural movement.

Inside and out, each aspect of the Zero Mass tactical/training footwear line has been meticulously designed to maximize comfort and minimize weight. “There is nothing in these boots that we didn’t rethink,” says Roger Huard, Vice President of Product Development at Wolverine Worldwide, Inc. “Even the lacing system was revamped in an effort to maximize weight relief.”

Crucial to reducing the boots’ weight was the reduction of outsole rubber and the introduction of a compression-molded EVA. Also impressive is the lightweight performance-oriented polyurethane insert, which delivers cushioning and shock absorption with no deterioration of each, no matter how long, or how hard, the boots are worn.

The lightweight training boots were also designed with a new “low-rider last”, which delivers the tactile interaction with the terrain Bates users were seeking. Increasing breathability was also a key focus. As such, nylon was incorporated in the critical areas of each boot, allowing for enhanced airflow and, therefore, enhanced comfort. The breathable, Aegis™ Antimicrobial-treated insoles also boast anti-odor, moisture-wicking properties, helping to keep feet dry.

While all four boots have durable leather uppers, the Desert Sand and Sage Green boots are made of Wolverine Warrior Leather. “Wolverine Warrior Leather is one of our most exciting innovations,” says Brent Babbs, National Sales Manager at Bates Footwear. “It’s breathable, easy to clean, and quick drying—three hugely important features to those in uniform.” Adds Huard, “Since the protector is incorporated into our actual tanning process, the boots are protected from virtually all sorts of dirt, chemicals, oil, and water-based stains.”

Bates proudly outfitted Ironwoman Kathy Marmon, a devoted soul right here in our hometown who participated in the 22nd Annual Bataan Memorial Death March at White Sands Missile Range, NM. Kathy, who was often seen training at the local gym in her Bates Lites boots, carried a 38lb pack while facing 40mph winds in the 26.2 mile course. The various food items she carried in the pack were then donated at the end of the event.

Kathy's son, an active Marine, served as her inspiration. She noted the most rewarding part of the very emotional and physical event was "seeing the survivors present to shake hands and thank us for participating. It was the most humbling and rewarding experience I've ever been through".

Kathy started a personal quest for fitness about 10 years ago and has competed in over 7 full marathons and 5 half ironmans. She felt a desire to do more and give back and has since been working to raise funds for Wounded Warrior Project. Her goal this year is to raise at least $10,000 for wounded warriors and their families. To help Kathy meet this goal, donations are accepted through her secure webpage for WWP.

In 1962, President John F. Kennedy signed a proclamation which designated May 15th as Peace Officers Memorial Day and the week in which that date falls as Police Week. Currently, tens of thousands of law enforcement officers from around the world converge on Washington, DC to participate in a number of planned events which honor those that have paid the ultimate sacrifice.

The Memorial Service began in 1982 as a gathering in Senate Park of approximately 120 survivors and supporters of law enforcement. Decades later, the event, more commonly known as National Police Week, has grown to a series of events which attracts thousands of survivors and law enforcement officers to our Nation's Capital each year. The National Peace Officers' Memorial Service, which is sponsored by the Grand Lodge of the Fraternal Order of Police, is one in a series of events which includes the Candlelight Vigil, which is sponsored by the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund (NLEOMF) and seminars sponsored by Concerns of Police Survivors (C.O.P.S.)

National Police Week draws in between 25,000 to 40,000 attendees. The attendees come from departments throughout the United States as well as from agencies throughout the world. This provides a unique opportunity to meet others that share a common brotherhood. In that spirit, the Fraternal Order of Police DC Lodge #1 sponsors receptions each afternoon and evening during Police Week. These events are open to all law enforcement personnel and are an experience unlike any other.

Participation:

Bates is a proud partner of NLEOMF who is a principal organizer of events at National Police Week. The National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial is a focal point of the National Police Week observance in Washington, DC and hosts both formal ceremonies such as the annual Candlelight Vigil each May 13 and impromptu, individual tributes to American fallen heroes of law enforcement.

Every time I get near a PX or clothing sales, I stop in and check out the latest in combat boots. I’ve done it for years, but since changing to the ACUs, I’ve only made one purchase and that was to replace my old standbys – my Jungle boots. I like the new boots I bought, but the soles are too tall and subject my ankles to roll-over. So, like the boot tease that I am, I keep looking.

Recently, I stumbled on the new Bates Delta boots, specifically the Delta-9 Desert Tan Boot. They caught my eye because of the way they look (very cool), and because they had this blue doohickey lying on the table beside them. I asked the Bates rep about the boot and he introduced me to the “Individual Comfort System”, or iCS, which is described as the latest in midsole comfort technology.

Here’s the concept: Bates has created a removable silicon disk that can be rotated among four zones to control firmness, cushion, and both inward and outward stability – definitely a novel approach to boot making. The rep pointed out that whether you walk on the outside of your foot or inside, you can rotate the disk to compensate and provide for better posture. You can also select a softer feel when walking on hard surfaces or a firmer feel when walking on sand or soft surfaces, which is great when going from garrison to the field. It all sounded good, and the boots looked really cool (we said that already, right?), so we had the folks at Bates send us a pair to try out.

I tried on the boots as soon as they arrived and I found them very comfortable right out of the box, always a good sign. Anyone who’s bought a boot that fit poorly in the store, I would bet, has probably come to regret it. I know I have.

The boot has a Vibram sole, padded ankle and upper (I’ll let you visit the Bates website for a list of specs). It also has a narrower toe box, which I really like. Some boots look like clown shoes with a big toe box, if you know what I mean? Many boots nowadays have too many “features” to make them look more space-age or something. To me they look silly. As for the iCS silicon insert, I’m not sure how long it’ll hold up, but there doesn’t appear to be any reason to suspect it would break down anytime soon. It lies below the comfort insert and seats snugly in a specially designed cradle. Only time will tell, I guess.

For the money, which is lot ($144), the Bates Delta-9 looks to be a winner. It passes the test for styling, ruggedness, and comfort. Country Music Star, Granger Smith, Walks 100 miles in Bates Boots

They say you can't understand a soldier until you walk a mile in his shoes. Country music singer Granger Smith decided to walk 100 miles in Bates combat boots from The Boot Campaign. He left Oak Hill in Southwest Austin Easter Sunday for Fort Hood in Killeen. He plans to raise awareness for U.S. troops.“I wanted to show there are other ways than to write a check, explained Smith. “I wanted to get out and make a physical sacrifice on my body and to prove a point to raise awareness, raise moral and raise patriotism.

He says his is only a small sacrifice compared to the ultimate sacrifices men and women in uniform make every day.“They don't have holidays and they don't have breaks,” he said. “They work 24/7 so we can have cool lives.”Smith has never served but always felt a strong connection and dedication to the military. He and his band have played for the troops in Iraq and Kuwait three times. Each time they have come away with a greater appreciation.“We want to encourage people to go out and thank a soldier,” Smith said. “It's not about raising money it's just about raising moral.”

The 31 year old Round Rock resident has partnered with the Texas-based Boot Campaign for the trek. He is calling this the "Sleeping on the Interstate" tour. The campaign, which encourages civilians to wear combat boots in a show of solidarity for the military, gives 100 percent of its proceeds to charities that assist veterans with post-traumatic stress disorder and physical injuries. His journey will take five days ending Thursday with a free concert. Boot Girl Mariae joined him as he left Austin, TX on Easter Sunday and Boot Girl Heather will join him April 28th on his final six mile journey to Fort Hood.

Texas Country Hitmaker to Trek From Austin to Ft. Hood for the Troops

Austin, Texas -- Texas Country hitmaker Granger Smith will literally be 'Sleeping On the Interstate' when he walks 100 miles in combat boots from South Austin to the Ft. Hood military post in Killeen, as a means to show support for the troops on the front lines, those at home, and those remembered.

Smith and his crew will go foot-for-foot starting Easter Sunday, April 24, beginning a trek from the 'Y' in Oak Hil where the U.S. 290 and SH 71 highways intersect, and walking until they reach Ft. Hood on April 28. That same day, Smith will perform an intimate acoustic concert open to all soldiers, families, and civilians at 5 p.m. at Killeen's Legends Pub.

"They say you can't understand a soldier until you walk a mile in their shoes, so I decided to walk 100 miles in their boots," Smith says of the idea. He adds, "It's a small sacrifice on me to symbolize the ultimate sacrifice they make for us and our way of life everyday. It's our American duty as civilians to outwardly show our patriotism and our appreciation for our freedom fighters. The Boot Campaign is built on that purpose and so is this journey. For that reason I encourage anyone in the area to come and join us; even just for part of the trek. Let's not just stand up for our military, let's move miles for them."

The Boot Campaign will provide the singer with a pair of Bates combat boots, just like the soldiers wear, which he will sport along his route as an additional nod to the hardworking military. Boot Campaign Gets Extra Kicks from Country Music Stars

The Boot Campaign is getting an extra kick. The program, which encourages Americans to buy combat boots in support of the armed forces, is welcoming a new wave of country stars for their ads and promotional efforts. Most recently, Josh Turner, George Jones, Craig Morgan, Randy Houser, Charlie Daniels, the Oak Ridge Boys, Jack Ingram and many others laced up with the Boot Campaign, joining already-onboard celebs including Joe Nichols, Gretchen Wilson and Heidi Newfield. The stars appear in print advertisements sporting combat boots as a way of showing gratitude to U.S. troops. Artists from other musical fields as well as athletes and Hollywood stars—heck, even the Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders are also showing their support.

The Boot Campaign began in 2009 as a truly grass-roots movement. It’s the collective brainchild of five Texas women, known as the “Boot Girls,” who teamed up to find a creative way to say thanks to those members of the American military who were returning home from duty. The campaign was inspired by the book by Navy SEAL Marcus Luttrell, Lone Survivor: The Eyewitness Account of Operation Red-wing and the Lost Heroes of SEAL Team 10.

The ladies came up with the idea of wearing combat boots as a symbolic, “walk a mile in my shoes” statement. The campaign’s signature boots are available for purchase through the bootcampaign.com website, and all pro¬ceeds go to organizations such as the USO and the Lone Survivor Founda¬tion, founded by Marcus, which helps wounded warriors and their families. Though the program is less than two years old, it’s gaining momentum with the speed of a fighter plane. “We get letters from the deployed military that have heard about us and they all have great things to say,” says Sherri Reuland, one of the five Boot Girls. “The Boot Campaign is really our call to action. It shows compassion and it is a reminder of what these men and women in the service go through every day.

When you wear the combat boots, the military people know that you are standing beside them in support.” And now, they’re picking up even more support from the country music community. Charlie Daniels was so impressed by the program that he included it in his annual charity event in Nashville this past September. The superpatriot hosted the “Get Your Boots On, Nashville” fundraising event to benefit both the Boot Campaign and Stars for Stripes. He sums up his support for the movement in a statement to Country Weekly, saying, “We’re putting some boots on the ground in this country to support the ones who put their boots on the ground in combat to keep our country free. It’s the least we can do.”

Craig Morgan, who served in the United States Army for more than 10 years, is also a recent “enlistee,” so to speak. “I was approached by the Boot Campaign organization to be a part of this,” says Craig. “I’m sure a lot of that had to do with the fact that I was in the Army for so many years. But anytime we can do something that’s going to improve the lifestyle of our returning soldiers, that is something we should do. For me, it was a no-brainer.”

Craig was familiar with the organization and especially admired the creative concept behind the movement. “It is unique,” he says. “There is a visual appeal to it. I have been working with the military since I left active duty, but we always do some investigating before we get involved with an organization. I like being affiliated with those that look to have some longevity, and the Boot Campaign looks like it will be a long-term thing.”

Randy Houser’s involvement with the Boot Campaign would seem a natural fit, on the heels of his most successful single, the humorous “Boots On” in 2009. He began hearing about the Boot Campaign after performing for a USO tour of the Persian Gulf in January of 2010. That proved a life-changing experience for the rough-hewn singer. “When I went on that USO trip, I saw what those guys do over there, and you realize what you are doing for them,” Randy says. “They have such a sense of team. Some of them almost feel guilty for coming home because they feel like they are leaving their team behind. Hats off to them, man.”

And much like the workings of the military, the Boot Campaign is prov¬ing what can be accomplished when people pitch in as a team. The fact that five everyday-type women, all with jobs and families of their own, can successfully spearhead a move-ment of this proportion suggests a true “American dream” story. That is certainly not lost on Randy or Craig.“I love to see Americans actually doing something,” Randy says with a robust laugh. “It shows that people can make a big difference. I mean, as art¬ists, we can show our support through songs or performing for the military. That’s how we raise awareness. But these five women have hit on somehing that looks like it’s really catching on.” And the campaign ads definitely catch your attention, Randy adds. “You know, you’re looking at a picture of a big star or a celebrity and you scan down and you see that they’re wearing those brown combat boots, and you just want to know why,” he says. “You know immediately that it represents something that’s pretty important.” Craig also makes sure to give the Boot Girls their proper respect. “These ladies have put so much heart and soul into this,” he says earnestly. “They are the ones who should be commended. I mean, all we [artists] have to do is take some pictures. That’s the easy part.”

The Boot Campaign is getting a further boost from Joe Nichols, who has been working with Marcus Lut¬trell as well as the Boot Campaign. Joe dedicated his latest music video, “The Shape I’m In,” to the men and women returning home from military service, and selected Marcus to provide the opening narration. The video was made in partnership with the Lone Survivor Foundation and the Boot Campaign. Joe says in a release, “We came up with the idea to connect the song’s lyrics with what Marcus and company have been doing already which is, helping soldiers get back into a normal life after returning home.” And fans can help by literally “getting your boots on.” While you’re at it, bring the family, urges Randy Houser. “I think every family portrait should have somebody, or even everybody, in combat boots,” he says, with a slight hint of facetiousness in his voice. “Heck, why not? It’s one way we can give back.” CW

Bates Boots on the Memorial Wall

In early 2009 Bates began a partnership with the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund (NLEOMF) to raise public awareness of National Police Week and to thank law enforcement for their service, sacrifice and dedication.

In efforts to increase awareness, Bates called on the support of our retailers to promote National Police Week that took place in Washington DC, May 2009. By doing so, our retailers sold paper boot cutouts in exchange for a $5 donation to the fund. We were extremely pleased at the results of this program with our dealers raising over $9000 for the NLEOMF. The boots that were collected by our dealers across the US were sent in to be displayed on the Memorial Wall.

With the support and commitment from each contributor, the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial is able to further pursue efforts in honoring and protecting the men and women of law enforcement. We thank everyone for their generous donations and participation during this campaign.

Bates Footwear and the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund Announce Partnership to Honor Law Enforcement Service and Sacrifice

Bates is pledging a minimum of $25,000 to the Washington DC–based, non-profit Memorial Fund that works to increase public support for the law enforcement profession by permanently recording and appropriately commemorating the service and sacrifice of officers as well as promoting law enforcement safety.

Bates Awarded Contract to Manufacture USMC Hot and Temperate Weather Boots

Rockford, MI (January 2009) – Bates® Footwear (Bates), a division of Wolverine World Wide, Inc. was awarded a contract totaling over $11 million for the manufacturing of Hot and Temperate Weather Combat Boots for the U.S. Marine Corps (USMC). Bates Temperate Weather Boots have already begun shipping to combat regions in support of ongoing military operations.

The DSCP (Defense Supply Center in Philadelphia) awarded Bates a one year contract to manufacture up to 91,500 pair of Temperate Weather Combat Boots and 76,000 pair of Hot Weather Combat Boots with four optional one-year contract renewals. Bates developed the USMC Hot and Temperate Weather Combat Boots to perform in a wide range of environments including those found in urban, desert, wooded and jungle areas. The USMC Hot and Temperate Weather Combat boots feature WWW’s proprietary Wolverine Warrior Leather® providing superior breathability and quicker dry-time together with direct attach construction offering superior cushioning and durability.

The contract was awarded following an industry wide, extensive 90-day Field User Evaluation (FUE) performed at “The Crossroads of the Corps” in Quantico, VA by the USMC. The FUE was used to assess the performance of the boots’ durability, breathability, and overall functionality in an operational environment. The FUE results were the most important factor in selecting the awardees in the final phase of this contract. The superior performance of the Bates boots in the field contributed to Bates winning a majority of the contract.

Bates wins Contract with U.S. Special Operations Command

ROCKFORD, MI (August 1, 2007) – Bates® Footwear, a division of Wolverine World Wide, announced today that it will manufacture advanced Chemical and Biological (CB) Protective Overboots for the U.S. Special Forces under a new $2.45 million government contract. Bates developed this cutting edge CB protective footwear in collaboration with W.L. Gore & Associates in response to the unique safety, comfort, and tactical challenges faced by the U.S. military. The overboot production decision was made by the Joint Program Executive Officer, Army Major General Stephen Reeves.

The CB Overboot utilizes proprietary state-of-the-art material technologies designed to minimize warfighters’ exposure to chemical and biological agents in vapor, aerosol, and liquid forms. The CB Overboot upper consists of an impermeable, GORE® CHEMPAK® Ultra Barrier fabric, including protective seam seal tape to ensure added integrity and protection against harmful agents.

The CB Overboot is compatible with standard issue footwear and all existing special operations and joint operations CB defense equipment. Integrating seamlessly with existing issue clothing, the CB Overboot provides superior tactility and comfort in multiple terrains and climates. A lightweight polyurethane outsole ensures unrivalled traction, while the GORE® CHEMPAK® Ultra Barrier fabric is used to create a rugged, easily compacted, highly protective upper. Bates® Footwear to Develop and Manufacture Tora Bora™ Alpine Combat Boot

ROCKFORD, MI (October 31, 2007)—Bates® Footwear, a division of Wolverine World Wide Inc., announced today that it will complete development and manufacture 10,000 pairs of Tora Bora™ Alpine Combat Boots under a new $2.2 million government contract with the U.S. Special Operations Command. Through initial development with the Special Operations Command, this new technical boot has been specifically engineered for soldiers operating in mountain warfare conditions. Bates will manufacture the Tora Bora Alpine Combat Boot with 100% U.S.-sourced materials at U.S.-based ISO 9001:2000 compliant manufacturing facilities in Rockford, Michigan; Big Rapids, Michigan; and Jonesboro, Arkansas.
