For years I struggled with a dress shoe that was versatile enough to wear on trans pacific and trans atlantic flights, get through security, and then walk on multiple surfaces in foreign countries without beating my foot into mush. Every shoe I tried either looked good and felt terrible or felt good and looked like crap. Even the pilots I talked to had the same problem with no answer. It dawned on me that the Secret Service and Marine Corps and Army and Navy must have a duty shoe that was great looking with a suit (or dress uniform) but had the performance characteristics of a running shoe. After all, how the hell can you run guard on a Presidential limo in leather dress shoes? The answer was the Bates Lites Black Leather Oxfords. This is unquestionably the best functional pair of shoes I've ever owned in my life...including every pair of Cole Hahns, Church's, Alden, Brooks Brothers, you name it. Now I love all my dress shoes from these guys and for the right occasion they can't be beat...but they all are gathering dust since I purchased my Bates Lites. I travel constantly around the world and the only pair of shoes I now take are these. Security - no problem, no metal. 15 hour flight - no problem they feel like slippers. Foreign city with concrete, brick, cobblestone, asphalt, or even dirt or sand - bring it. These shoes shine in 1 second, feel like running shoes right out of the box, and look like a million bucks with a suit. My Bates Lites have now done tours in Los Angeles, New York, London, Zurich, Hong Kong, Taipei, Macao, Shanghai, and Beijing and a dozen cities in between. Don't even think about it, just get some.
