Great boot, just one problem I've worn these boots for a couple of yrs and they are great. I actually have 4 pairs of GX8 boots, 2 pair for work 2 pair for home. The ones I use at work have been great, actually haven't even taken the 2nd pair out of the box. Been wearing the first pair for almost 2 yrs and are still going strong. The pairs I have at home are a different story. I switched to my 2nd pair at home only because stepped in something that I didn't have time to clean off my soles at the time lol. Anyway been wearing them for about 9 months now and noticed that the leather is tearing out at the seam where the tongue slash upper meets. There is now probably a 1/2 inch hole in the boot. I still wear these boots and love the comfort but I'm afraid the hole will just grow and wear the boot out prematurely.

A bit tight at the toe What I did not like: The composite toe on my left boot only, pinches at the big toe. Since there is plenty of room at the little toe, I suspect this is a quality issue with the placement of the composite toe during manufacture. I did order extra wide. The right boot was perfectly fine in this area, no pinching on either side. However both boots are showing a serious stretch in the leather, just behind the composite toe area. With wide feet like mine, I suspect the leather will tear through at this point. Again I suspect this is a sizing/quality control issue during manufacture. The man made material used at the side zippers as a guard against pinching your skin when zipped, will sweat your foot. It might be durable, but not comfortable like leather would be at this position. No matter what I did, I could not keep the laces tied! So I replaced them, problem solved. Even though there is no problem with the side zippers now, I am really not sure they will hold up over time, like larger YKK zippers do. The bates zippers are very fine toothed and plastic. These boots are NOT USA made, but they are not advertised as USA made, no foul there. What I did like: The fit and finish at the soles to the uppers is excellent, and the soles themselves are great, they don't hold mud or other less pleasant "stuff". Good traction, too. The stitching is well done through out. I really like the cushioning at the back of the ankle, very comfortable. The eyelets are nicely stitched around for strength. The overall look of the boot is also excellent. Long term: I can NOT recommend these for people with wide feet, because of the sizing issue. Due to the pinch issue on the left boot at the composite toe, I will not be able to wear these boots. And that is the reason for the low rating. I do like Bates boots very much, I am just disappointed in this style and this experience. Sorry Bates, you missed the mark on these! I wore these for about two months before I wrote this review. I never could wear them more than about 2 hours due to the pinching.

Light and Cool I work in the Middle East where summer temperatures are over 130f these boots are the best! Extremely durable, lightweight and great traction! I have tried many different boots and styles, Bates boots are in a league of their own!

Outstanding boot all around This boot is more than worth the money. I cut trees for a living. This requires toe protection. The gx8 has more than enough of that, without the awkward steel toe weight. I had a crane operator drop a log on my foot recently. It was a 24ft red oak log with a 3ft diameter-i.e.: very heavy....it hit the composite toe with enough crushing power to put my foot flush into dry earth. (regular soil and grass is hard!) Not only did I walk away unharmed, but the boot itself was not damaged internally or cosmeticly. I'll never say they're perfect, but I will say, as far as I am concerned, this boot is a permanent tool in my professional arsenal hands down. 'Nuff said...
