Exceptional quality. - by , May 07, 2019

Overall, I am very pleased with my experience; from ordering, the exceptionally fast fulfillment of my order, and the quality of the boots I received. This was my first experience with Bates, and I will be a return customer as well as recommend the company to friends. The leather is top quality and I can't begin to describe how good these feel on my feet This is my fourth pair of jump boots and, although I have only been wearing them for about a month, they have become my favorite. Critique: I would prefer that the heel was 1/2 inch taller and of "solid" rubber composite. Also, there should be more of an arch support.

Outstanding Customer Service-Great Boots - by , Apr 30, 2019

I had an issue with the quality of the first pair I received. Bates took care of this without me having to do anything but send them a photo of the defective boots proving they had been spoiled. They very promptly sent ma a new pair. As a military veteran, I have high standards for combat boots. These are well made, comfortable, and look great. I could not be any more impressed with my experience and I will be purchasing more from Bates very soon.

Great boot, one year and still going - by , Feb 21, 2019
5/ 5 Stars
After several years of working on the rail road I decided I needed a better boot. I gave several other brands a try but they would fall apart after 6-9months. The rocks next to the tracks just tear up soles. I found this to be unacceptable. I remembered having a pair of Bates boots in the army that lasted forever, so I went to the local surplus store and test fitted a pair of these Bates side zip boots. I usually wear a 8.5-9w boot, had to get a 9.5w. Glad I found them locally to try on. Since i have to have a 90° sole it really limited my boot selection. I was worried about the durability of the zipper, but it is still going strong. I did notice the zipper sticks when you try putting on the boots. But only if you didn't lower the zipper all the way before taking them off the previous time. I think it took about 24hrs of use and several applications of polish to finally brake them in. The zipper flap took a bit longer to brake in. I got it wet one day and worked the leather over a table corner to finally get it to snap on while wearing it. I have had them for a year at this point, and expect to get several more months out of this pair before needing another. I hope since these are a goodyear welt I can have them resoled. I polish them about once a week and the leather has held up really well. Still can get a good shine on the toe. At this point the rocks have tore up the sole up to the point it won't pass company regs much longer. In all my work boots I've had to replace the insoles and this boot isn't any different. I recommend this boot to my coworkers, but they want a 6-8" boot. I think an 8" version may sell better amung rail roaders. Personally I hope to resole this pair and maybe buy a 2nd, so that they can air out between trips. The only thing I would change about these boots. I wish the heel was 1/4-1/2" thicker, so I can go longer before having to resole.

This boot is good but can be made better. - by , Feb 11, 2019

I wear these boots about 90% of the time through out the work day and I have to say that I like them but I wish they made another pair that was 8 inches high instead of 11 inches. And with a steel toe other than that I have no complaints

Needed the Ankle Support - by , Jan 31, 2019

I bought these mostly for the ankle support when Im out flying my Paramotor. In the military I would always get a wide size but I could have got away with just a regular because they seem a little big. Im alright with it though because I added some shock soles on top of what was already in the boot so it doesnt seem like my feet float to much in them. They came with a nice polish also. I was worried about the zipper because Ive never had a pair of boots like these before but Im already liking it a lot. It feels strong and I havent had a issue with the zipper falling while Im wearing them Not much else to add besides if you have bigger calfs you will have a harder time buttoning the top because they do go up higher on the leg. Oh and keep in mind they arent steel toe for military having that requirement. Tread is thick and meaty so landing in just about anything isnt going to be a issue to include snow or rocky uneven ground

21 years of use and still going! - by , Jan 07, 2019

I bought a pair of these when I was 13 years old at a local surplus store. I'm now 34 and have worn them almost daily for 21 years straight! I have NEVER had to untie the laces since I tied them after buying them due to the zipper feature. I was so happy to find that these are still in production because I'm finally to the point where I need to replace mine. The leather is badly worn and I've had to superglue the soles back together a few times, but none of that was necessary until after 15 plus years of almost daily wear. Best. Boots. Ever. Hands down. Thank you Bates!

This product has great features...??? - by , Dec 05, 2018

LoL! Actually they DO have great features! Back in my Army days, I bought Corcoran 'Jump Boots' because I liked the amount of ankle support they gave me. However, with the flat soles, they weren't worth a @##*$ in snow! After I got out, I bought a set of H-D side zip boots and fell in love with the ease of putting them on and taking them off. Shortly thereafter, the H-D boots were discontinued. After searching around, I stumbled across these Bates boots. EVERY thing in ONE package! Side zip, tall shank for support, and waffle-stomper tread for use in snow. I guess if I had a gripe; it would be that they only last about one year before they need to be replaced. Having said that: I don't do ANYTHING to them. No polish, no waterproofing, no nothing (my Drill Sergeants would be appalled!). But I will continue to buy them because this is one of the only companies that offers EXACTLY what I want!

These seem like solid boots. I bought them for my son for the mosh pit. Side zipper is a nice touch.
