Best boots I’ve ever owned - by , Jun 08, 2019
5/ 5 Stars
I’ve been beating the ever loving crap out of these boots in hopes they would fall apart for over two years straight on a ship. Seawater, non skid, oil, grease, sewage, chemicals, you name it. I’ve stepped in it in these. I’ve been trying to destroy them for years and they’re still the first pair I grab every morning. I wish I could afford another twenty pairs to last me the rest of my career. Honest, tough, comfortable, dependable.

Great boot but the lace guide has pulled away from the leather. - by , May 04, 2019

Boots are super comfortable (My best pair of Bates yet) but one of the speed lace guides on the upper part of the boot has pulled away from the leather. I hope there can be a way to repair.

Good foot portion bad upper leg - by , Feb 25, 2019
3/ 5 Stars
The boot has always fit comfortably around my feet except for a little bit of extra rubbing and friction around my pinky toe. What gets on my nerves is the leather leg portion has never been forgiving. Its tight, it had a white build up around the ankles no matter how much I tried to clean it up, and putting the boot on and taking it off it has always felt like the leather on it was dryer than a bone. I would get another pair if it was improved.

Worst boots on the market - by , Aug 10, 2018

These boots fall apart after 6 months. I wouldn’t buy them at all. They’re uncomfortable and fall apart easily. For something so expensive you would think they’d be worth the money.

Terrible - by , Jun 30, 2018

As a US sailor I have had to buy on average one pair a year as the soles crack at the point where the shoe bends to the point that they are unwearable. I have spent hundreds of dollars due to this. I bought a pair of older military boots that meet the requirements. Funny how the older boots never fail, but these new ones do. BEWARE!

Nice boot, disappointed - by , May 20, 2018

I have bought many pairs of Bates over the years and always loved them.I have had my pair of Durashocks for only 6 weeks and they have begun falling apart. I hope it was just a faulty pair I received and they aren't all like this but because of this I will likely never buy another pair of Bates again.

cracked like everyone else's and company won't stand behind them - by , May 07, 2018

I went through three pairs of these in two years, every six months the sole cracked across the ball of the foot like clockwork. I sent in pictures and emails to Bates twice and was told that it was normal wear and tear related and not due to the boot themselves. Really? There is no way I would have bought another pair if I was not required to wear them, I didn't have a choice. This is a problem that everyone knows about and what I would expect out of a made in China cheap boot, not a company that says they value their customers. So when they finally authorized the Bates rough out boots, which seem to be almost the same boot, they are still fine after over two years of the same use and wear. I have heard repeated complaints about these boots from everyone I have served with and I can tell you right now that because of this I will never buy Bates boots if given a choice.

Love the feel - Doesn't last - by , Feb 08, 2018

While serving on the ship on the security force I was allowed to wear tactical boots. They were great. Went through them about every other year mainly due to scuffing the tops but never the sole. When I got out of the navy in 2000 I started working field service for a robotics company. The speed lace was great for the airports. They were as light as a pair of tennis shoes. Working in the paint industry I ruined them with paint and bought another pair. I threw away the old pair. Then about 6 months in they cracked like everyone is saying. They were the 8" boot but because they don't make this boot in an 8" version I decided to check out the 9" today. I was thinking that maybe I bought a knock off version online. The price was almost half of the MSRP of these boots. I tried again with the "boot-mobile" that came to the shop every month. 6 months later they cracked. Maybe it was the paint I was walking in all the time. I bought 2 pair the next time because I needed a clean pair for the office also. They both cracked in the sole. At this point my boots are no longer available. I tried the side zip. The zipper dug into my calf. And... they split. I came to this site to try the more expensive boot thinking the problem had been that I was just buying cheap boots. Hard to believe that 17 years later they are still receiving complaints about the soles cracking and they are still in business. I support Made in the USA and companies that support our military, but not at the point of going broke buying boots. Hey BATES, I think our active duty and vets deserve better. Have a look for yourself.

Terrible product - by , Aug 21, 2017

I am in the administrative field (Yeoman) and I purchased these boots about 3 years ago. The boots have never experienced rough terrain or any vigorous field exercises. The soul on my boots right below the ball completely crack all the way through and I know of other people this same issue has happened to. I do not expect boots to last forever. However, I used to be in construction and I have had other boots that I wore in rough terrain, vigorous field exercises, concrete pours and many other construction jobs and they lasted me for 5 to 7 years with no problems other than laces breaking. I expected these boots to last at least 10 to 15 years especially being in an office setting. I am very disappointed in these boots and I have never had a problem with Bates products before.
