I was issued my pair of Bates Oxfords in July of 2008 in bootcamp from the US Navy. I still wear them currently for my job outside of the Navy. These are by far some of the most reliable shoes I have ever worn. They are very comfortable, hold an excellent shine, and are a class A product. I am ordering a new pair only after 8 years of use from my current pair. I highly reccommend this product to future users.

This shoe fit my son perfectly. The craftsmanship seems top-notch. He's been wearing them to break them in before he heads of to college. Being made in the USA is the reason I chose Bates.

The order was recently completed about 3 weeks ago as I write this. There were no hitches in either ordering or delivery. The shoes arrived in the time stated by the method of shipping, and were in new condition. The shoes were exactly what I expected them to be. The fit was perfect, but then that had a lot to do with my having gone to a shoe store prior to ordering and getting my feet size measured to ensure the size ordered would be correct for me. I recommend anyone ordering by mail to take this very important step so there is no problem with size. By getting a good measurement of your shoe size (both feet!!!!) you can avoid returns for incorrect size. I cannot yet speak to how well the shoes wear as I have only been wearing them for 3 weeks, but they are quite comfortable, not too tight or loose, and I have had no issues with my feet blistering as I break the shoes in, since the size is about as perfect as it can get. One thing that impressed me: These shoes were heavy! A *lot* heavier than other shoes I have bought off the shelf, but then that is no doubt because they aren't cheap foreign imports, and well-made. Time will tell if the shoes are indeed well-made. For comparison purposes, the last pair of oxfords I got were in fact a cheap import, and I was shocked that I first put them on in February new out of the box and by the end of August, the heels had nearly worn completely through, a result of walking a mile and a half each day. Now I expect some wear on a pair of shoes if I walk that much, and probably more wear than normal, but that was ridiculous. That led me to Bates in the hopes that I could get a pair of quality shoes that would last a reasonable length of time. My impressi0ons thus far are that the shoes are very well made, and they are very much like the pair I was issued by the US military back in the 70s. I always did like that pair of military corfams and this pair is just like them which was my reason for buying them in the first place. Be happy to post a follow up in a year or so after I have had some experience with how well they wear, but for now, the transaction was hassle-free, the shoes fit perfectly, and arrived when they were supposed to.

I received these oxfords a couple days ago to complete my fire department class a. Wow better than I expected. I ordered the "c" narrow, was a little snug at first but after wearing for several hours yesterday for funeral it feels perfect now. It was important to find an oxford made in USA, well constructed and durable. This shoe took a first shine very well and polished up with a very nice shine. You won't be disappointed in this solid shoe.

These appear to be great shoes, and they are very comfortable right out of the box. They come with decent insoles, which are removeable if you want to install your owm custom orthodics. It's important to note that they are described as "polishable". They do not come with a high shine, but they take one beautifully! If you don't mind giving them an old fashioned spit shine, or even enjoy it as I do, then you won't be disappointed. It is too soon to tell how well they will hold up, as they are still new, but they seem to be well made and sturdy, with good Vibram soles, so I don't anticipate any problems there.

Good shoe that should last you a long time... if you care for it. - by , Nov 20, 2012

As of the writing of this review, I am wearing my 5th pair of the Bates Leather Uniform Oxfords. The shoes are definitely a great buy, with the average pair lasting over 2.5 years before needing the heel replaced and the leather maintaining well (with good monthly polishing after building a good base coat); my oldest pair, which is still wearable today, hasn’t been polished in years but still retains a strong sole and supple leather. These shoes are quite robust, if you care for them. This means regular polishing with actual shoe-polish until a thorough basecoat is built, and then you can ease up a little. Most of the problems I have seen with Bates leather shoes, and I haven’t seen many, is that some wearers try to apply just a thin coat of wax and buff it to a shine or, worse, use a quick-shine product (usually a black liquid in a bottle) and call it “done”. The thin coat will protect your shoes for a while, but will wear off; the quick-shine products aren’t good for bare leather and should never be used until a good base is built up, and even then, sparingly. Overall, a good shoe that should last you a long time.

Thanks for the great review of this classic style. We are glad you have gotten great wear out of each pair you have had and continuing to care for them definitely keeps them in the best condition and extends the life of the shoe. Thanks for the great feedback!

Good Looking Dress Shoe, But Potentially Some Quality Issues - by , Sep 09, 2011

I got a pair of these less than a year ago, but the two shoes have not aged consistently. They polished up very nicely and looked great for the first month or so. After this however, I began to notice some quality issues. On one of the shoes the leather in the toe area looks good and is not cracked, but on the other shoe the leather is now cracked and split in the same area. In fairness I owed a pair of bates shoes previously and had no such issues, so I guess I may have gotten a bad pair.
