I was extremely disappointed on the rubber vinyl of these shoes. Had them for a few years in my closet. Wore them alot. Today after walking on some hot asphalt the bottom and heel area fell apart...came off in pieces. Very embarrassed when friends saw it in public! I ripped off the heels...open holes visible....so that I could walk comfortably..

Defective sole? - by , May 08, 2018

Shoes look amazing and super comfy, however the right sole in the heal area makes a clicking sound from inside the shoe when I toe off. Tried taking out the insole and still makes the sound. Can’t walk anywhere without a loud audible click.

Expected more - by , Apr 09, 2019

I have been a soldier for 20 years and wanted something a bit more durable than the standard patent leather shoe. I ordered this shoe expecting it to be genuine leather, but it was not. It does not respond to shoe paste and I was greatly disappointed with the comfort of this shoe. Guess I have no alternative but to return to patent leather.

Good Looking Dress Shoe, But Potentially Some Quality Issues - by , Sep 09, 2011

I got a pair of these less than a year ago, but the two shoes have not aged consistently. They polished up very nicely and looked great for the first month or so. After this however, I began to notice some quality issues. On one of the shoes the leather in the toe area looks good and is not cracked, but on the other shoe the leather is now cracked and split in the same area. In fairness I owed a pair of bates shoes previously and had no such issues, so I guess I may have gotten a bad pair.

These appear to be great shoes, and they are very comfortable right out of the box. They come with decent insoles, which are removeable if you want to install your owm custom orthodics. It's important to note that they are described as "polishable". They do not come with a high shine, but they take one beautifully! If you don't mind giving them an old fashioned spit shine, or even enjoy it as I do, then you won't be disappointed. It is too soon to tell how well they will hold up, as they are still new, but they seem to be well made and sturdy, with good Vibram soles, so I don't anticipate any problems there.

This shoe fits the need of my miltary son exactly - by , May 15, 2018

Ordered this shoe and it arrived quickly. It is for military purposes and is just as expected and meets requirements. I ordered one size too large but fit is pretty consistent with other shoe sizes and the return process is easy enough with this company. I will order more shoes from Bates.

While working 24 hours at the firehouse these shoes are extremely comfortable and professional looking . Easy on and off when changing into fire gear . Keep up the good work. Can’t find shoes like this anywhere.

Durable, but needs some upgrades - by , Sep 02, 2019

This is not my first time buying these- so that's always a good sign. Just a couple of things for buyers to know in advance- (1) they are long. If you wear size 9 and but size 9 you'll be ok. Your toe will reach to mid toe cap. I imagine that is to accommodate the narrowing toward the toe. (2) You'll want insoles. There is no arch support and virtually no padding. Once you throw some insoles in there you'll be good to go and these shoes can last you almost decade of heavy use if you take care of them. Would definitely recommend.

Good shoe that should last you a long time... if you care for it. - by , Nov 20, 2012

As of the writing of this review, I am wearing my 5th pair of the Bates Leather Uniform Oxfords. The shoes are definitely a great buy, with the average pair lasting over 2.5 years before needing the heel replaced and the leather maintaining well (with good monthly polishing after building a good base coat); my oldest pair, which is still wearable today, hasn’t been polished in years but still retains a strong sole and supple leather. These shoes are quite robust, if you care for them. This means regular polishing with actual shoe-polish until a thorough basecoat is built, and then you can ease up a little. Most of the problems I have seen with Bates leather shoes, and I haven’t seen many, is that some wearers try to apply just a thin coat of wax and buff it to a shine or, worse, use a quick-shine product (usually a black liquid in a bottle) and call it “done”. The thin coat will protect your shoes for a while, but will wear off; the quick-shine products aren’t good for bare leather and should never be used until a good base is built up, and even then, sparingly. Overall, a good shoe that should last you a long time.

Thanks for the great review of this classic style. We are glad you have gotten great wear out of each pair you have had and continuing to care for them definitely keeps them in the best condition and extends the life of the shoe. Thanks for the great feedback!
